The SOCOM transportable kit is the clearest case: an 802.11a bridge pair spanning two sites with an IPsec tunnel between Cisco PIX firewalls running over the top of it, because in 2003 the radio’s own protection was not something to stake a deployment on and the encryption belonged above the link rather than inside it.
Also the backhaul for the Cisco-partnered mesh pilot, from an existing city tower to the anchor community building over licensed-exempt bridges.
