AutoCAD & MicroStation

Where the career began — and the tool used decades later to plot wireless coverage heat maps by hand.

Also known as AutoCAD, MicroStation, MDL, CAD

Drafting and design in AutoCAD from Release 12 and in MicroStation, certified in both by 1995.

The first substantial application was digitising historical railroad property maps dating back to the 1800s for CSX RPI, including MDL application development against the MicroStation platform — the first work in a career that has kept returning to the problem of putting physical infrastructure into a data model.

It came back years later in an unexpected place: the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office countywide wireless survey predated the propagation software that does it for you, so the coverage heat maps were built in AutoCAD’s survey tools from measured readings taken driving the county.

And it never really left. The outside plant drawings, the data centre rack elevations and the courthouse closet layouts are all the same discipline.
